Today most Americans will be cooking hot dogs and drinking beer to celebrate the original thirteen American states declaring their independence from Great Britain on this day in 1776. But if you ask most of them to tell you why they did so, what was so god-awful bad about the British government that they felt the need to leave their own country, answers may be hard to come by.
The declaration itself lists a number of abuses allegedly perpetrated by George III against the colonists, but those only occurred once there was a problem between the British government and her colonies. What was the problem?
Government schools would have you believe it was merely "taxation without representation." As with most of the history they teach, this leads impressionable students to believe that as long as they are "represented" in their legislatures, they are free.
Well, we were all "represented" in 2020.
You're never going to believe this, but there was a lot more to the dispute between the colonists and the British government than taxation without representation.
In today's episode of Tom Mullen Talks Freedom, I share some insights into the conflict taken from my 2015 book, Where Do Conservatives and Liberals Come From?: And What Ever Happened to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness? Part One.
I don't have an audio book of this release, so if you've been looking for one, here is your chance to get about 10 pages of the book in that format. I hope it will also shed some light on the conflict and provide some food for thought about where we are today.
