On Episode 85 of Tom Mullen Talks Freedom, I went through the spending increases of every president in my lifetime. People use all sorts of tricks to try to make the presidents they like look better than they were in this area. Sometimes, they will talk about who grew the deficit, or talk about spending as a percentage of GDP (a completely meaningless statistic - there is no reason we have to spend more on
government just because GDP went up. Businesses trend in precisely the opposite direction).
But if you just make it simple and ask, in percentage terms, which president increased spending the most over spending in the last year of his predecessor? It's pretty cut and dried. It goes up much faster when a Republican is in the White House, no matter which party controls Congress.
I did a blog version of podcast, too, which none other than Michael Savage found interesting. He had me on his podcast, which dropped today. I come in at about the 55:40 mark. The first hour is an interview with Steve Forbes who is as solid as ever.
I planned on talking just about spending, but as we kicked things around, I was able talk about gutting military spending and Ending the Fed. So, not bad to get those ideas out to such a large audience.
Give it a listen here.
Coincidentally, new Libertarian Party Chair Angela McCardle appeared on the Timcast IRL webcast on the same day. So, a whole lot of people heard our message over the past 24 hours.
Tomorrow on Tom Mullen Talks Freedom, I'll have Naomi Wolf on to talk about her excellent new book, The Bodies of Others. Naomi and I were both speakers at the 2008 Revolution March in Washington, D.C., put on by the grass roots supporters of Ron Paul (Dr. Paul was the keynote speaker). But if you think she is just a liberal who is good on "civil liberties" and bad on everything else, I
encourage you to read her book. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
On Friday, I'll have Patrick Newman of the Mises Institute on to talk about his excellent book, Cronyism: Liberty versus Power in Early America, 1607–1849. Patrick also edited the posthumously released fifth volume of Murray Rothbard's massive, Conceived in Liberty.
