I’ll be honest with you. These past few years have been the most discouraging I can remember in terms of the prospects for freedom. Of course, the most depressing aspect was the public’s reaction to the Covid Regime, ranging from passive
acquiescence to militant support. That so many to this day defend the atrocities perpetrated by state and national governments against their populations truly makes me question whether totalitarianism is avoidable.
But even before Covid, there was another disturbing trend across the political spectrum: increasing anti-capitalism. The left, the right, and even many libertarians seem to be finding reasons to denigrate property rights and economic
freedom.
Loyola University professor Walter Block joined me on today’s episode of Tom Mullen Talks Freedom to discuss academic research he’s done which as produced some
rather starting results: anti-capitalism just might be a product of evolution!
This is one you don’t want to miss.
Yes, the left has always tended towards socialism, although not nearly so unanimously in the 20th century as in the 21st. Let’s not forget it was a Democratic Congress and president that deregulated the
airlines.
It’s also true that the Republicans never really delivered on freer markets. Sure, Republican presidents would fiddle with the dials on the New Deal regulatory machine, but never was the power of this unelected bureaucracy diminished. And
as for spending, well, it goes up twice as fast when a Republican is in the White House (no matter which party controls Congress) as when a Democrat is in there.
Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself.
However, the GOP’s anti-capitalism was truly set loose with the first Trump campaign. No Republican since Ronald Reagan had excited the conservative base as Trump did in 2016. But what was different about Trump from previous candidates? Apart from
his strong stance on immigration, it was his anti-capitalism. Trump told the base their manufacturing jobs went away because of free trade deals that he would reverse.
Now, a quick glance at manufacturing jobs as a percentage of all U.S. jobs since 1947 makes clear this is completely false. Manufacturing jobs had been declining steadily over those 70 years with no discernible change after 1994 (NAFTA) or 2000 (China
enters WTO). But Trump’s story resonated with voters because they want to believe freedom is the problem.

I chatted with a rep at Bluehost yesterday who said the migration team promised the migration of tommullentalksfreedom.com over to their platform would be finished within 48 hours. That was approximately 24 hours ago, so hopefully by tomorrow.
