I had the good fortune to interview Carla Gericke for today's episode. Carla needs no introduction to libertarians. She is the President Emeritus of the Free State Project, an effort to get tens of thousands of people to
move to New Hampshire, take over the state, and leave everyone alone.
If you've been hearing from right wingers about people moving from blue states to red states for political reasons, well, the Free Staters were way ahead of that curve. They've been at it for over a decade and have had tangible results in the electoral process in
NH.
It is part of a larger trend towards returning to federalism, a foundational principle of these united States. Contrary to the quasi-religious ravings of Establishment statists in both parties, the American system was not founded as a uniform nation. We don't call the
abomination in Washington, D.C. a "national government." We call it the "federal government" because it's supposed to be the government of a federation.
The idea was the federal government would provide military defense and a few other functions and would otherwise leave the states free to govern themselves internally as they saw fit.
We were already seeing a move back towards this system before 2020. Many states had nullified federal marijuana laws. They were reclaiming the power to regulate immigration, a power James Madison, the man who wrote the words of the Constitution, said was "no where granted" to
the federal government in the Constitution. Some states were declaring themselves "sanctuary states," refusing to enforce federal immigration walls, while others, like Texas, are passing restrictive state immigration laws and talking about building their own walls.
Whatever you think about any of that, regulating immigration is a power reserved to the states, as both Madison and Jefferson said in arguing for nullification of the Alien and Sedition Acts.
Well, the Covid disaster - Coronasteria as I like to call it - certainly accelerated the process. Most of the states fell in with the idiotic recommendations of Dr. Fauci and his fellow quackeaucrats to close down all of society for an extended period of time. However, a few states with
Republican governors, beginning with South Dakota and then followed by Iowa, Florida, Texas, and others, pushed back. They asserted their states' power to not listen to the federal government's recommendations and make a different decision for themselves.
And of course, their results on fighting Covid were the same or better than the most totalitarian lockdown states, which Fauci and the media are still tripping over themselves to completely ignore.
Of course, the D.C. Empire somewhat watered down the effect by sending out trillions of dollars in unconstitutional federal aid. Had each state had to pay for its own policies, we probably would not have seen the totalitarian nightmare we saw over the past two
years.
Nevertheless, the trend continues as some states are now outlawing vaccine mandates even for private businesses while others are mandating them just to go into a restaurant or a gym. And that really was the point of the U.S. Constitution, as emphasized by its Tenth
Amendment.
Please take a listen and share my interview with Carla Gericke and do everything you can to support the Free State Project and her campaign. And start thinking about where you might want to escape to if you're in a state
whose rules you can no longer abide. Maybe a libertarian New Hampshire is for you. Or maybe a conservative Florida or Texas. Or maybe you like calling the government "Daddy!" and should move to New York City.
It is nice to still have a choice.

It's also available in paperback here. It'll cost you less than a fiver and makes a great stocking stuffer!
