Democratic Senator Joe Manchin has done a great service by killing President Biden’s mega-boondoggle “infrastructure” bill – at least for now. Bad ideas in Washington seem to have a least nine lives. Then, when they’re finally passed, they never go
away.
See Obamacare.
I remember when “Hillarycare” was defeated in the 1990s. It was basically the same as Obamacare. The main difference was Killary wanted to mandate employers instead of individuals.
The Republican answer? Mandate individuals instead. That paragon of limited government, Mitt Romney, later signed a state version of Hillarycare/Obamacare into law as governor of Massachusetts and the rest is
history.
It was the same story with infrastructure. A political movement comprising three different political parties tried to get government to take over the building and managing of roads, canals, bridges, and later railroads for generations. For generations, they
failed.
Then, they finally won an election and we’ve been afflicted with god-awful government infrastructure ever since.
The modern Republican Party may have opposed Biden’s social engineering bill dressed up as infrastructure, but they wholeheartedly voted for the separate roads and bridges bill. So, they’re basically useless on this
issue.
Tomorrow I’ll have economics professor and author Tom Dilorenzo on Tom Mullen Talks Freedom to talk about this and a closely related topic – inflation.
Tom is best known for his excellent books on Dishonest Abe Lincoln, but I like these two even better:
Hamilton's Curse: How Jefferson's Arch Enemy Betrayed the American Revolution--and What It Means for Americans Today
How Capitalism Saved America: The Untold History of Our Country, from the Pilgrims to the Present
Tomorrow's episode is definitely one you don’t want to miss!
If you signed up on this list before last weekend, you may not know I have a new book out called, It’s the Fed, Stupid. You can download a free ebook copy here.
It’s also available in paperback here. It’s priced at a pre-hyperinflation level so grab a few copies for friends if you can.
It makes a great introduction to the government’s most economically damaging institution for liberals, conservatives, libertarians, socialists, and independents alike.
It also helps me keep the lights on here so I can continue to bring you great content.
