It's Labor Day once again and you know what that means. Dumb tweets and other social media posts regaling us to thank labor unions for the day off and for all days off. If not for unions, we're told, we'd be working 16 hours per day, 7 days per week, for $1.00 per hour.
Of course no intelligent person really believes this, not even most of those making the argument. If unions were really the cause of the 40-hour work week, we'd have had it in 1830 when there were plenty of labor unions. Instead, Americans averaged more like 60 hours per week back then and that doesn't even count a lot of work self-employed farmers did just to survive.
On today's episode of Tom Mullen Talks Freedom, I debunk the obtuse "thank the unions" arguments and talk about what really raises wages and shortens working hours (although less hours is not an absolute good in all situations). I also provide some free
resources to read more about the true nature of labor unions and the labor market in general on the show notes page.
